Hey guys, I’m back again with some news from the past week. But I’m not writing the biggest news from the week, I’m writing about what games or content has been announced this past week. This is something I intend to do for a while. Try and make it my “thing”, like Adam and new releases. So, shall we get started:
Capcom Announce Strider HD
Firstly we have an announcement from the people over at Capcom. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con they announced a new HD game in classic arcade series Strider. Coming in early 2014, it will simply be called Strider and is being developed by Double Helix for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It “tells the story of Hiryu, the youngest ever ‘Super A’ ranked agent of an elite corps known as the Striders. Strider Hiryu receives orders to assassinate Grandmaster Meio, supreme dictator of Earth, who has plunged humanity into a dystopian dark age.”
Basically this is another high definition release of another existing title, like the many we’ve seen before, a shiny new look with an updated control system. Personally I’m not familiar with the original 1989 side scrolling platform game, so I’m not overly thrilled for this. But it does have it’s loyal following who no doubt will be “striding” into stores to purchase this (it looks like a downloadable title, but you can’t stride into a digital store).
Angry Birds Star Wars II Announced
Rovio has officially announced Angry Birds Star Wars II, after their not so subtle teaser pic (see above). This sequel in the very successful franchise that is on well… every platform, is based on Star Wars episodes I-III (the best three, right?), and includes new birds, new levels, and the choice to side with the Empire or the Rebel Alliance. They’ve also added a Skylander’s-like toy component, another way to take money from the pockets of hard working parents of easily convinced children.
Although isn’t that what Angry Birds is all about. Fair enough it’s an amusing way to pass time while waiting in a queue to buy a game more worthwhile, but when is enough enough. Maybe it’s time to let it go, start on something new that isn’t the same thing repeated over and over again. There are a few other companies or franchises that could do with starting afresh (Cough ‘Call of Duty’ Cough).
New Ace Combat Announced
Namco Bandai has announced a new Ace Combat game, Ace Combat Infinity. It has only been announced for the PlayStation 3, but only in Japan so far. There’s no word on a western release, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear something from the developers about it at some point. Not much has been confirmed about the game, but if you check out the trailer below you’ll see it looks like it’ll centre around some sort of apocalypse.
I’m quite excited to see another Ace Combat game. I enjoyed the previous games, flying about in a variety of fighter jets blowing up stuff. As a franchise it doesn’t have a huge amount of competition so it does dominant the genre, but it is one genre that is difficult to produce a game for and is generally hard to make yourself stand out. It’ll be interesting to see what Namco Bandai can accomplish this time around, let’s hope the stay true to their previous games.
