Adam Talks- The Walking Dead: 400 Days

Summer is in full swing, or perhaps not if the recent British weather is anything to go by.  Think stereotypical rainy London and you won’t be far off the mark.

Anyway, this week sees the release of Telltale Game’s much anticipated DLC: The Walking Dead – 400 Days.  Available on US PSN right now, via Steam on July 3rd and Xbox Live on July 5th.  Apparently, EU PS3 owners will have to wait a little while longer, until next week, for their dose of emotionally-charged zombie madness.  Trust me, if ‘The Walking Dead: Season 1’ was anything to go by, it’ll be well worth the wait!

Think of ‘400 Days’ as a bridge connecting Seasons 1 and 2. The episode follows the story of five all new characters during, you guessed it, the first 400 days of the zombie apocalypse.  Expect each character’s stories to interweave amongst each other with your choices making a huge impact on how the episode turns out.

I’m going to come out and say it: The Walking Dead: Season 1 was my Game of the Year 2012.  It had been so long since I’d played a game that a) presented me with difficult choices that actually affected the storyline, and b) touched my very soul to tear-jerking effect.

It’s funny, because a lot of what was great about TWD:S1 is present in the two Game of the Year 2013 contenders: Bioshock: Infinite and The Last of Us.  It’s funny, the three best games of the last 12 months have all been ‘father simulators’ in some shape or form.

I’m expecting a lot from 400 Days, and for £4.99 (or “the equivalent”) I doubt I’ll be disappointed.  But oh how disappointed I’ll be!  I’m not a DLC sorta’ guy usually, I don’t like the concept of making gamers pay for something that could easily have been on the disc in the first place (I’m looking at you, EA and Activision!).  However, if said DLC adds whole new story elements and features then I’ll let it slide.  But just this once!

I guess I’d better include some information on what to expect from this DLC then.  Straight from the developers themselves (and via CVG who I robbed the quotes from):

“Centered on a truck stop on a Georgia highway, The Walking Dead – 400 Days is a DLC episode for Season One of Telltale’s award-winning game series. 400 Days tells five linked stories; each taking place at different points in time and from the point of view of a different survivor, from day one of the undead apocalypse to day 400.

“The five stories can be played in any order and will change based on the choices that you make. Echoes of the choices you made in Season 1 will carry over into 400 Days and the choices you make in 400 Days will resonate into Season 2.”

Early reviews from critics and users have been extremely positive so far, so fingers crossed The Walking Dead: 400 Days will once again hit that mark of excellence.
