Play This! 23 May 2013

Welcome to ‘Play This!’ our weekly round-up of the games you should (or shouldn’t) play this week.

1. Resident Evil: Revelations

Developer – Capcom

Release Date – 24th May

Platforms – X360, PS3, PC & Wii U

There’s nothing like a high definition port of a Nintendo 3DS game.  Surprisingly, said high definition port is actually pretty playable (for a recent entry in the Resident Evil franchise).

I’m something of a Resi fan, myself, I played through Resident Evil 2 only last week which re-ignited my interest in anything Resident Evil (or ‘Biohazard’ to Japanese readers).  Resident Evil: Revelations apparently reverts back to the classic survival horror elements which made the franchise so popular back in the late nineties. Think: a limited supply of ammunition and emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving.

The game’s downfall is its origin: a 3DS game. However, despite this, it still looks to be an enjoyable entry in the Resident Evil franchise and may at least wet your appetite until Resident Evil 7 rears its ugly, mutated zombie head.

Play This? If you’re a fan of the franchise (bring spare bullets).

2. Fast & Furious: Showdown

Developer – Firebrand Games

Release Date – 24th May

Platforms – X360, PS3, Wii U & 3DS

What do we have here, another movie tie-in game courtesy of our good friends Activision? You bet your Vin Diesel-loving ass.

I almost want to stop the write-up here but I guess I should give you all a few more details.  Fast & Furious: Showdown is a co-operative racing game which brings the events of the Fast & Furious 6 and Fast Five and puts you in the driving seat (quite literally).

The game is being released on all platforms imaginable including iPod touch so it’s ‘that’ sort of game.

Play This? No, unless you’re Vin Diesel.

3. Air Battle Hockey 3D

Developer – Agetec Inc

Release Date –23rd May

Platforms – 3DS

This game combines the frantic action of air hockey and throws in a healthy dose of competitive elements.  It sounds riveting, I know.

You’ll have six different shots at your disposal with each shot having a different effect on the ball.  Think of all the possibilities!

Play This? You won’t regret giving this one a miss.

4. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Developer – Techland

Release Date – 22nd May

Platforms – X360, PS3 & PC

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a first-person shooter set in the Wild West and latest entry to the Call of Juarez series.  The game will be available via Steam, Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade and runs on the Chrome Engine 5.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon aside, it’s never a good sign when the next game in a series is a digital download only title.  Anyway, expect gunslinging aplenty and lots of NPCs called Juan.

Play This? Conserve your ammo on this one.

City Bus Simulator 2010 New York PC 2

5. City Bus Simulator: New York (Extra Play)

Developer – Excalibur Publishing Limited

Release Date – 24th May

Platforms – PC

I’ve got to admit, I have no idea what the “extra play” bit of City Bus Simulator: New York (Extra Play)’s title means.  The original game was released back in 2010 so I expect TML-Studios have spent the last 3 years slaving away, ironing out bugs and adding machine guns onto all the buses.  Or perhaps not.

If you’re one of those people who always dreamed of quitting their job in rural Kentucky, moving to New York and driving a bus then this is the game for you!  Wow, lucky you, I never thought there’d be a video game so relevant to your life story.

Play This? If only to drive your bus off a cliff. Actually, are there any cliffs in New York? I fear not.
