Hello, all you nonsensical gamers, welcome to NSG’s new weekly article. Here you’ll find some of the biggest news topics from throughout the week.
EA Announce The Sims 4 Will Be Single-player
EA has announced on its development blog that Maxis is working on the next game in the really, really, really, really popular Sims series and that The Sims 4 will be out sometime in 2014. Other than being released for both PC and Mac, neither Maxis or EA have announced many details. The only tiny bit if information that is available is that it will be a “single-player offline experience”. In my opinion, that is the best decision they’ve made in a long time. We don’t want another SimCity fiasco.
EA Exclusive Publishers For Star Wars Games
More EA news now with reports that they have acquired the exclusive licence to publish Star Wars games. EA has announced a deal with Disney where the two companies have decided upon “a new multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines.” Also according to Ea Labels president Frank Gibeau, Battlefield developer DICE, Dead Space developer Visceral and Mass Effect developer Bioware are all working on Star Wars games. And to be honest, if there were three companies you would want working on Star Wars games it would be those three.
Microsoft Memo Might Point To No Always-Online
The apparent email is said to have been sent to “all full-time employees working on the next Xbox”, and has been obtained by Ars Technica. The email contains the following text:
“Durango is designed to deliver the future of entertainment while engineered to be tolerant of today’s Internet. There are a number of scenarios that our users expect to work without an Internet connection, and those should ‘just work’ regardless of their current connection status. Those include, but are not limited to: playing a Blu-ray disc, watching live TV, and yes playing a single player game.”
While this is all unconfirmed, it would appear that the always-online rumours may be untrue. Which is good. Nobody wanted that. But it still looks like there is a little more information that points to the next Xbox being able to function as a set top/cable box that will allow playback of live TV. Which is bad. Too much focus on entertainment and not enough on what should be it’s primary function, gaming.

New Details For Infamous: Second Son
We now have more information about one of the most exciting first-party PlayStation 4 games in development, Infamous: Second Son. Firstly we know that the main character is 24-year old Delsin Rowe, a character of Native American heritage (cough*Assassin’s Creed*cough) described as “the artistic type with a chip on his shoulder.” At the start of the game, Conduits, those fellas with special powers and what in the Infamous universe, are being transported by the government. But after an accident screws up the vehicle they’re in, Rowe learns that he’s been a conduit all along. Much like Cole in the first games who could control electricity, Delsin can manipulate smoke. Infamous: Second Son takes place seven years after Cole died (Sucker Punch settled on the second game’s good ending as canon), as Deslin wages war on the Department of Unified Protection who are responsible for hunting down Conduits. Game Informer (who released the info) have more detailed information if you want to have a look.

WOW Loses A Load Of Subscribers
World of Warcraft has lost 1.3 million subscribers, confirms Activision. This pushes it down to eight million overall. It had as many as 10 million subscribers at the time of Mist of Pandaria’s release, and had more than 12 million at its peak in 2010. But despite the decline in numbers, World of Warcraft still remains the top subscription-based MMORPG in the world. Activision stated that the lost subscribers were “mainly from the East, but in the West as well.”
Ubisoft Fires Assassin’s Creed Creator And Other Folks
Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Desilets has once again left the company. Well, that’s what they’re saying. Desilets left the company in 2010 and joined THQ, but returned when THQ Montreal was bought by Ubisoft in January. Ubisoft stated that, “the good faith discussions between Patrice and Ubisoft aimed at aligning Patrice’s and the studio’s visions have been inconclusive. As a result, Patrice has left the studio.”
But Desilets himself has come out and stated that the whole shenanigan wasn’t that amicable. He has stated that he was actually fired, “I was notified of this termination in person, handed a termination notice and was unceremoniously escorted out of the building by two guards without being able to say goodbye to my team or collect my personal belongings.” He intends fight his dismissal. It has also recently been reported that Ex-Assassin’s Creed production manager Jean-François Boivin has reportedly been fired from Ubisoft as well. With all these people losing there jobs across the industry is there going to be anybody left to make games.

Might It Be Called Xbox Infinity?
More rumours and speculation are flying around about the name of Microsoft’s next-gen console. We’ve had Xbox 720, Durango, just Xbox, Xbox 8, Xbox Fusion and now the word on the web is that it may be called Xbox Infinity. “Sources related to development of the new Xbox have confirmed to IBTimes UK that the console… will be called Infinity,” sources speaking to The International Business Times have stated. But this information still hasn’t been confirmed or unconfirmed by Microsoft. We’ll just have to wait until the Xbox announcement on 21st May.
Ouya Release Date Has Been Pushed Back
Ouya have announced that after securing more venture capital funding, $15 Million, they are pushing back the release date so that they have more time to manufacture more hardware. Along with greater than expected demand from retailers and players they have moved the release date to 25th June. This is a good thing for the company because as Ouya founder and CEO Julie Uhrman put it, “This is a really important step towards being around for the long haul.”

PS4 Marketing Leaks
“Greatness Awaits”. That may be the slogan for the Playstation 4 according to a leaked script for a trailer. Apparently towards the end of the trailer a flag with the Destiny symbol is meant to be hanging from a window, so it may be more about the game or about the games available for the console. The source for the script is the same source that leaked the PSP “Step Your Game Up” campaign, so it may be true even though Sony have yet to comment. Who knows? Maybe it’s just misdirection. There are lots of rumours online at the moment, lots of speculation.
Lots Of Information About Destiny Revealed
Bungie has recently updated the site for it’s next game Destiny, revealing lots of information about the up and coming game’s classes, plot, and world. The update has given more information about about the Warlock, Titan and Hunter class Guardians that players will be able to control.
Firstly, Warlocks are those who spent a long time studying and mastering some of the arcane energies of the Traveler. Secondly, Titans are far more physically focused. About Titans, the site says, “Our enemies may be deadly and merciless, but so are you.” Lastly, you have Hunters that are more like reformed rogues. They “once prowled the wilderness and wastelands, taking big risks for even bigger rewards.” But Hunters have changed their ways and their “brand of daring and ingenuity is needed now more than ever.”
Abandoned Earth and the Moon are both detailed as locations, though blank pages are also on the site for Mars and Venus. More information on two enemy factions, The Fallen and The Cabal, has been released as well. The Fallen are described as a galactic scourge and come in Dreg, Vandal and Captain varieties, while the Cabal are rumoured to be centred on Mars.
I did say there is lots of information. The game is in development for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and most likely the next Xbox (although that’s not been confirmed).
Watch Dogs’ Disrupt Engine May Enable Cross Platform, Cross Generation Play
The Disrupt Engine has been built for Watch Dogs, Ubisoft’s forthcoming open world title, and allows its studios to develop the title so that delivers the “the same core game experience on each platform.” It is set for release on PS3, X360, Wii U and PC on November 21, and will be a PS4 launch title. “We built the technology to support our vision for Watch Dogs and make sure we delivered the same core game experience on each platform,” said Senior producer Dominic Guay. “Disrupt will allow us to connect players together in completely new ways that players have not experimented before. This also extends to mobile devices and tablets.” He also talked about how Ubisoft wants everything to be connected, and how this applies to their technology. In my opinion all this info points towards the possibility of cross platform play, or at least you’ll have the same features on each platform.
