According to Blizzard, the action-RPG has broken day-one PC sales records, selling more than 3.5 million copies of the game in 24 hours. They shifted 3.5 million copies on its day of release, a feat was achieved despite server problems that meant people couldn’t actually play it.
A further 1.2 million people received copies of Diablo III from signing up to the World Of Warcraft Annual Pass promotion, which brings the launch day total up to 4.7 million and 6.3 million copies in its first week.
“We’re definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live,” says Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime.
“We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo IIIplayers out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support.”
Does this make sense?: One of the biggest PC franchises of all time made by one of the biggest online games developers of all time is the fastest selling PC game ever? What a surprise. Never saw that coming.
